6 things every parent should know about Mariners JHM.

We Are About Jesus – Every service our students can count on 3 things.
1. Student lead worship preparing hearts to receive God’s message.
2. Leaders and teachers with a heart for God and a strong understanding how to apply God’s word to Junior High Students.
3. Response time- after our message we take time to reflex what God is saying to us. Through worship, group prayer, prayer walls and sometime alone time. We give our students time to reflex on how God is speaking to them.
Sign Up For The Parent Email
We are a team and we love our parents! To better partner with us I encourage you to get on the “Parent Email”. You will receive an email every Thursday afternoon with past stories and upcoming information. You can forward to friends and family with links to our website and our podcast. Be informed and sign up today.
New “Check In” Process
Your child will check themselves in this year. This is a big change for you and your child. We suggest talking with them before you separate and make a plan to where they can meet you after service. Some kids like to hang out at the Student Center and parents meet them there. Some meet at the café or worship center. We do encourage you to walk in with your child for the first couple of weeks until they get comfortable with the new surroundings and staff. Our staff will be there to help with the process. We are excited to have them!
Do Not Try To Do It All
We know that life is busy and that your child will not make all events. Please prioritize. Weekend services are a must. We have 3 services to choose from 1 Saturday evening and 2 Sunday morning. Worship, teaching and friendships are formed in our services. After Sunday service there are service projects, small groups, and student leadership. We encourage you to find one of these areas that will best fit your child and help them grow spiritually. We will be happy to give you more information about these opportunities. Our ministry also has many ideas and events we can recommend for families to grow closer to Jesus together.
You Are Always Welcome
We have an open door. Please, as parents join us in our services we would love to have you. Stop by for one of our services or become one of our leaders. Contact me at any time. You know your student best and you hear the feedback from our services. You are a big part of my vision for the future of JHM and I welcome your comments. I am easy to get a hold of either by email or phone. I am available to pray with you or just talk about your student any time. I love getting to know our families and do make time to have lunches and dinners with families. My schedule gets tight so I cant always fit everyone in. So every month we have a coffee with the pastor time that any parent can swing by and meet with me, info for that in on our website.
What We Teach
Our church leaders meet each week to discuss what the message will be for the week. My team and I then meet to pray, go over scripture and put together a message that Jr High students can understand and apply to their lives. Our hope is that this will create great family discussions and that you will grow in your faith together as a family.

Things I learned in college

There are so many great things that I learned while in college.
I learned the value of real friendship.
I learned the value of God Word (the bible) and how its more than a text book.
I learned the rural church isn’t the only kind of church.
I learned that the world is bigger than one city or state.
I learned that God has a plan for me even if some of my professors don’t.
I learned that they may not like you now but alumni will like your money later
I learned that fake tears are the currency of weak men
I learned that Jesus loves me….over and over and over again.
I learned that the best thing I can do is listen to God and His will.
I learned Grad school is best is taken right after graduation.
I learned if you made it out single your a lucky one, found a beauty in California (my wife)
I learned that part time jobs are worthless and working in a church for free is priceless.
I learned that your wont blend in everywhere, good thing that applies to everyone.
I learned that mistakes are fun if you learn from them
I learned that snoring is the price people pay for free tuition.
I learned you can get TV in your room with a good pair of bunny ears
I learned that everyone has an opinion and some of them suck..
I learned that i can write for a B- but pay to have editing for an A (worth it)
I learned that Professors are never wrong, in their own class…
I learned that you can have a cat in the room if your willing to be on a video for the school
I learned that some people are called and come peoples parents told them their called
I learned that you never stop learning, unless you have tenure.
I learned that your best stuff comes when you have someone that believes in you. I learned that there is always a tomorrow. I learned that the nothing useful ever happens after 11pm, unless there’s a camera rolling I learned ideas have power for the driven, they cause fear in the weak. I learned that my mom was always right. I learned that reading is not optional if you want to be a leader. I learned that grace is given but much is required (dean, not God) I learned that I better change or I will be of no use to anyone (most hurtful comment)
I learned that i needed college to do what i do now as a pastor I learned that it wasn’t easy, but God didn’t call me to easy he called me to obedience.
I learned that Buffalo wings bring people together I learned that learning never stops…

Stuff you can eat… Burgers

Everyone should have access to great burgers.
Your welcome.

Ingredients
Grilled Onions:
2 tablespoons canola oil
2 medium onions, diced
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
Pinch salt
Special Sauce:
1/3 cup mayonnaise
3 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon hot sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
Burger:
1 pound ground meat (equal parts sirloin, chuck and brisket)
2 tablespoons canola oil
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
6 slices American cheese
6 soft potato hamburger rolls, (recommended: Martin’s Brand)
3 tablespoons butter, melted
2 Roma tomatoes, cut into 1/4-inch thick slices
6 green leaf lettuce leaves

Directions:
Caramelized Onions:
Heat the canola oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until soft and lightly caramelized about 15 minutes. Add the mustard and a pinch of salt and cook for another 2 minutes. Remove the onions from the pan to a small bowl and set aside.
Special Sauce:
In a medium bowl combine all the ingredients and whisk until smooth.
Burgers:
Preheat the broiler to low.
Form the ground meat mixture into 6 equal patties. Do not over handle or compress the patties, keep them loose. This will help create a tender burger. Over mixing and compacting will result in a tough heavy burger.
Heat the canola oil a large heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-high heat.
In a small bowl combine the salt, pepper and garlic powder and season the burgers generously with the mixture. Put the patties in the skillet and cook for 4 minutes. Flip and let cook for 1 minute, then top each patty with a piece of cheese. Cook for another 2 minutes until the cheese is melted and the burgers are medium.
While the burgers are cooking, lightly brush the buns with melted butter and put them on a sheet pan. Broil until lightly toasted, about 2 minutes.
To assemble, split the buns and spread each half with about a tablespoon of the special sauce. Put the burgers on the bottom half of each bun, top with caramelized onions, tomato and lettuce. Cover with the top half of the bun and serve.

We are in an incredible season at Mariners Church. As we have reflected on our twenty years as a church, we are preparing for the next twenty by intentionally developing the next generation of leaders. This means we are working extremely hard to create a ministry family that is passionate about the work of the Holy Spirit in the world, confident in who they are and where God is taking them, and ready to change the world.

In High School Ministry I am looking for a specific person. Someone who is a learner, team-oriented, and a servant. I am looking for someone who fits well with our team and is looking to be challenged. High School Ministry is in need of an Area Director.

A high school Area Director is primarily concerned with reaching a community of students, connecting them to the church, and facilitating their growth within the community. Area ministry works in partnership with on-campus events and weekend services designed for high school students. Responsibilities will include community building with students and volunteers, recruiting and utilizing volunteers, teaching God’s word, partnering with off-campus organizations to reach new students, developing relationships with local high schools, and operating in a team environment with other staff members.

Specific Ministry Responsibilities:

Identified as the leader of a specific area of ministry in the surrounding community of the church. Completely responsible for the church’s presence in that area.
Partner with other Area Directors to plan area-specific events that reach new students and enfolds them into the church.
Teach 2-3 times per month in the host home. The style should be high-energy and engaging to a non-church audience of high school students. Work closely with other Area Directors to create teaching series.
Be a leader of leaders. Identify, equip and empower new leaders that work directly with the Area Director.
Create opportunities for Mariners presence in local high schools.
Partner with para-church organizations like FCA, Youth for Christ, and YoungLife to reach students not currently a part of the church.
Ability to maintain close relationships with students, parents, and others within the specific community.
Collaborate with other Area Directors to create all-area events throughout the year.

Characteristics of Fringe Students:
Fearful
Lack of confidence
No connection to group
Feel at-risk
Feel unsafe
Don’t understand what is going on

Ideas for how to work with fringe students:
Meeting them where they are at
Finding out their interests and meeting them in that interest
“You can love people or you can control people, but you can’t do both at the same time.”

Tactics and “how-to”: Empowering leaders
For teen leaders: we model how to reach out, speak affirmation to them to help them feel confident
For volunteers: affirm them, caring for their spiritual needs, modeling how to reach out
For parents: affirm them, meet parents where they are, help teens thank their parents
Sharing the Need
Shining the spotlight on people who maintain deep relational connections with students instead of “up in front” people
If you text with a student, call them; if you email, text them; if you call them, meet up with them.
